Kid’s love those colorful Go-Gurt yogurts but they are loaded with extra sugar, modified corn starch, carrageenan and other artificial ingredients and food dyes.  Plus, they are made with low-fat yogurt, removing all of the good and filling fats.  I know, we used to believe that low-fat was best, but the evidence is overwhelming that fat in our diet isn’t what makes us fat.

This recent article in the New York Times, says that lower fat diets don’t result in weight loss or reduce our risk for heart disease.  In fact, a low carbohydrate diet will actually reduce your risk for heart disease and help you lose weight but that’s for another blog.

This smoothie is great for breakfast because it super easy to make (a kid could do it) and starts the day in a healthy way. It is made of full-fat yogurt that will keep kids (and adults) full longer. Good quality, full-fat yogurt made from milk from grass-fed cows can be found at your farmer’s market, natural food store or Whole Foods.    It is so creamy and naturally sweet, and a real treat for those of us who are used to low-fat or fat-free dairy products.

Live Probiotic Cultures                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Look for a brand that contains active bacterial cultures.  Commercial brands may have some live probiotic cultures, but yogurt from grass-fed dairy cows can contain millions of living bacterial. Consumption of live probiotics supports digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Our pediatrician especially recommends yogurt and probiotics to build up the good bacteria in the gut when taking antibiotics.  Sometimes we need those antibiotics to fight a nasty infection but they kill off all the bacteria in our bodies, both good and bad.  That’s why antibiotics cause diarrhea or other digestive discomfort in many of us.

This smoothie is highly nutritious AND sweet so everyone wins.  I slip in a tablespoon of chia seeds because they have a very mild taste that goes unnoticed but a boost of fiber (5 grams/tablespoon) and omega 3 fatty acids.  A teaspoon of fish oil blends in nicely or if your child is suffering from constipation a tablespoon of ground psyllium husk.

INGREDIENTS

1 Cup of Plain, Full-Fat Yogurt Made from Milk from Grass-Fed Cows

1 Banana (fresh or frozen)

½ Cup of Frozen Strawberries

½ Cup of Frozen Pineapple

1 Teaspoon of raw, local honey

1 Tablespoon of Chia Seeds (optional)

1 Teaspoon of cod liver oil, strawberry flavored (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Break the banana into 3 or 4 large chunks.  Put all of the ingredients in the blender and serve.
