While it is tempting to share healthy eating tips to help you keep those New Year’s Resolutions, I can’t resist sharing my Holistic Hot Toddy Recipe instead.  Similar drinks are often recommended as a remedy for a cold or flu for good reason.  This version is rich in nutrients and tastes delicious.  It is a great alternative to egg nog or coffee drinks.

Lemon juice is high in vitamin C which may provide protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.  Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints, which is one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation.

Ginger can relieve arthritis, nausea, and chest congestion; it is a natural anti-inflammatory agent and has a wonderful spicy aroma.

Raw local honey is different from store-bought honey.  It has not been pasteurized, heated or processed in any way, and therefore contains many benefits.  In some studies, it has proven more effective than over-the-counter medicine at relieving a cough.  Raw local honey can lessen your seasonal allergies in eaten regularly and contains healing antioxidants.

While not required, whiskey is a great addition to the Hot Toddy.

Lemon Ginger Hot Toddy (serves 2)

–  3 oz whiskey

–  Juice of ½ a lemon

–  1 inch of peeled, sliced ginger

–  2 tsp local honey

–  filtered water

Boil the water with the ginger. Pour the hot ginger water it into two mugs.  Add  1/2 of the lemon juice, a shot of whiskey and a tsp of honey into each mug.  Enjoy!
