Healthy Halloween? – Healthy Ideas for Trick-or-Treat

Halloween is huge at our house.  You can’t beat scary decorations, fun costumes, pumpkin carving and of course CANDY!   As a mother and health coach I find it a challenge.  I take the unorthodox approach of letting my kids eat as much as they want on Halloween.  They eat ALOT but also taste alot and then throw it away.  It makes me seem awesome and gets much of the candy out of the house.   My kids can usually be persuaded to keep some favorites and donate the rest (our dentist collects candy for our troops).

I took an informal carpool poll on halloween treats and here is what I learned:

Kid-approved alternatives to candy

  • Halloween toys (sticky skeletons, fake mustaches, fangs, glow in the dark bats, and parachute skeletons)
  • Pumpkin stickers or pencils
  • Glow sticks
  • Homemade sweet treats (that whole candy-tampering scare was just an urban myth)
  • $$$$ (everyone loves getting money, even small coins)

Guaranteed to get your house skipped next year

  • Raisins
  • Organic pretzels
  • Fresh fruit or vegetables
  • Religious literature (yes, we got some last year).

Happy Halloween!
